2017 Set as target for passenger rail arrival in Roanoke

Platforms will be built and rail lines improved to accommodate the Roanoke-to-Lynchburg link.

Roanoke will get passenger rail service within 42 months, a top state rail official said Thursday as he gave new details about the construction of the track and accessories needed.

The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation expects the train to arrive by September 2017.

But there is wiggle room in Roanoke’s favor.

“We might be able to start the train sooner,” said Kevin Page, the agency’s chief operating officer.

For more than 30 years, Roanokers have wanted their trains back. Years in the making, with years to go, the process of making that happen is nonetheless moving forward.
