Anticipation filled the frigid air Saturday afternoon as hundreds of people huddled on the platform of Kemper Street Station, waiting for steam or the sound of a whistle that would signal the arrival of The Virginian, Norfolk & Western’s Class J 611 steam passenger train.
Bracing themselves against the wind and periodic snow flurries, the crowd erupted into cheers when the locomotive rolled out of a tunnel and through the station 45 minutes behind schedule.
